Navigating the Cold and Flu Aisle: Information for Nurse Practitioners

Antibiotics are inappropriate for treating the common cold, but many over-the-counter (OTC) medications are available. The U.S. News and World Report 2023 pharmacist survey was used to identify the most highly recommended OTC cold medications. A total of 388 articles were reviewed. The strength and quality of the evidence for antitussives, decongestants, and antihistamines across 26 articles were reviewed. Results indicated that coughs should be treated with dextromethorphan and nasal symptoms alleviated with pseudoephedrine.
