US-PICT safe, effective in treating nonshoulder injuries

Sunday, November 26 | 1:10 p.m.-1:20 p.m. | S4-SSMK01-2 | Room E353BAttendees of this session will learn about the safety and efficacy of ultrasound-guided percutaneous irrigation of calcific tendinopathy (US-PICT) for muscular treatment. In his presentation, Domenico Albano, PhD, of IRCCS Istituto Ortopedico Galeazzi in Milan, Italy, will present results from his team’s research, which found that US-PICT has value as a therapeutic option for the gluteus and rectus muscles.Although previous studies have demonstrated that US-PICT is a useful first-line treatment method for the rotator cuff, the researchers wanted to try this technique in other areas of the body.Albano and colleagues wanted to study US-PICT’s safety and efficacy on other areas beyond the shoulder, comparing its US-PICT’s effectiveness in lower body treatments to that achieved in the rotator cuff. The study included data from 82 patients who were evenly placed into case (shoulder) and control groups (rotator cuff). The researchers observed no complications in either group. They also used 9-cm needles in 31 patients in the case group for deeply located calcifications within the gluteus medius, rectus femoris, and gluteus maximus tendons. The team used the visual analog scale (VAS) to measure pain in the patients. It found that the average preprocedure VAS score for the case group was 8.8, with a significant drop to 4.5 at one month and 3.6 at three months (p
