Discontent in Nurse Academics: An Emerging High-Stakes Problem

Academic life is currently under a great deal of strain across industrialized societies. Various stakeholders ’ long-held assumptions about higher education are running headlong into economic uncertainty and profound social change. While nursing professors might seem free of some of the pressures faced by their faculty colleagues, especially those in many humanities, social science, and natural science di sciplines, the entire higher education sector is at a crossroads. However, rather than confronting the questions of student demand for the credentials being offered in these other disciplines, we in nursing are facing doubts as to whether there will be sufficient professors with the right credential s and experience to train the next generations of entry-level practitioners, let alone adequately prepare the next generation of faculty.
