Performance of age-adjusted and fixed threshold D-dimer to exclude DVT in those with low pre-test probability – Single centre experience

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is common with potential for significant morbidity due to consequent pulmonary embolism and post-thrombotic syndrome. As the clinical presentation is non-specific, and the gold standard diagnostic tool of compression venous ultrasonography is a limited resource, diagnostic algorithms have been developed to risk-stratify patients requiring further investigation. In clinical practice, those with a high clinical pre-test probability (PTP) proceed direct to imaging, and those with a low PTP have a D-dimer measured to determine the need for imaging [1,2].
