Predicting Major Complications and Discharge Disposition after Adult Spinal Deformity Surgery

Surgical intervention for adult spinal deformity (ASD) can result in postoperative morbidity. Lee et al [1] found that 32% of patients with ASD experienced at least one major or minor postoperative complication following spinal fusion. The Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), which numerically quantifies a patient's comorbidity burden, can be used to risk-stratify patients before surgery. The CCI was developed as a predictor of death in hospitalized patients and has been used frequently in studies of patients undergoing ASD surgery because it can independently predict postoperative morbidity, discharge disposition, and need for revision [2 –4].
