Video Analysis of Communication by Physiotherapists and Patients in Video Consultations: A Qualitative Study using Conversation Analysis

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to rapid implementation of video consultations across physiotherapy services. While patients and physiotherapists often report positive experiences with this remote service model, they are also concerned that physiotherapists cannot lay hands on the patients. This can make it difficult to conduct a high-quality physical examination and have the patient perform exercises safely. While there is an extensive and fast-growing body of research on video consultations, to our knowledge, no study has used micro-analytic methods to investigate how video consultations are actually being delivered and how physiotherapists and patients manage the limitations of the remote modality.
