Effective Strategies for Working With Drug-Using Adolescents Who Are Unmotivated to Quit or Treatment Resistant

More than 3 million US adolescents meet the criteria for a substance use disorder, yet less than 10% enter treatment each year. This gap in treatment services is widening, leaving a significant number of youth vulnerable to adverse health consequences and increased mortality as a result of untreated drug problems. Child mental health providers commonly struggle with what to do about ongoing drug use in these youth. This Clinical Perspectives aims to address this knowledge gap by educating the audience about research-based strategies for working with unmotivated or treatment-resistant drug-using adolescents.
