Mitochondria play many important roles in cellular homeostasis, ranging from metabolic regulation to cell signaling. When mitochondria no longer meet cellular needs, they are degraded or removed. In this review, Uoselis et  al. cover the many and varied pathways that cells use to rid themselves of unwanted mitochondria.
