Opioid and Benzodiazepine Co-Prescribing Trends from the Emergency Department from 2012 to 2019: A National Analysis
Background: In 2016, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued its strongest safety warning ( “Black Box Warning”) for concomitant use of prescription opioids and benzodiazepines due to overdose deaths. Objective: Our objective was to look at trends of opioid and benzodiazepine co-prescribing in the emergency department (ED) using national data, because recent data are sparse. Methods: T his is a retrospective review of data collected by the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey between 2012 and 2019.
