Assessing postoperative analgesic and opioid-sparing efficacy of peripheral nerve blocks in patients undergoing bariatric surgery
By a cohort study of 89 patients who underwent laparoscopic bariatric surgery including sleeve gastrectomy and Rouxen-Y gastric bypass, Schott et al [1] evaluated the effects of peripheral nerve blocks (PNB) on postoperative pain and opioid use and showed that addition of truncal PNB (preoperative paravertebral nerve block or postoperative transversus abdominis plane block) to the standard enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocol improved postoperative pain control and decreased total opioid consumption.
