Acceleration Time and Ratio of Acceleration Time and Ejection Time in Bicuspid Aortic Stenosis: A Valid Clinical Measure?

Evaluation of aortic stenosis (AS) severity can be challenging due to discrepant Doppler and two-dimensional data.1 Bicuspid aortic valves (bAVs) account for up to 50% of replaced stenotic aortic valves;2 however, continuity equation –derived indices have been shown to differ between patients with degenerative tricuspid aortic valve (tAV) stenosis and bAV stenosis.3,4 The ejection dynamics acceleration time (AT) and ratio of AT to ejection time (AT/ET) have been shown to help determine AS severity5,6 and predict outcomes7 but have not been tested in patients with bAV.
