Protecting Lives and Preserving Dignity: Emotional Safety in Emergency Nursing
Emergency nurses work in complex, overcrowded, and often chaotic environments where creating safe spaces for patients, families, visitors, and staff can be challenging.1 Despite the challenges associated with emergency care delivery, emergency nurses are tasked with prioritizing patient safety, but what does it really mean to provide safe care? Health care quality and safety are commonly measured using physical indicators of safety.2-5 For emergency nurses, patient safety may include making the right decision in triage, safe medication administration, adherence to treatment protocols, frequent reassessments, preventing falls or hospital-acquired infections, and protecting people from violence.
