Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery: No Longer “Horrid Butchery”

Over the last several decades otolaryngologists have become increasingly involved in the care of patients with thyroid and parathyroid diseases. Endocrine surgery has become a key component of residency training, a significant element of many otolaryngologists ’ practices, and the sole focus of some practitioners. This same period has also seen a significant evolution in the practice of endocrine surgery—with advances in surgical procedures, adjunct technologies, and approaches to minimizing surgical risks.
