Giving psychology away: The Psychology Foundation of Canada (50 years, 1974–2023).

Canadian Psychology / Psychologie canadienne, Vol 64(3), Aug 2023, 212-220; doi:10.1037/cap0000367The Ontario Psychological Foundation was created in 1974 as a small psychology-focused charity. It has grown over almost 50 years and was renamed The Psychology Foundation of Canada in 1995. As its founding chair, I received the Canadian Psychological Association Award for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology as a Profession. This prestigious award might have been given more appropriately to the foundation and all those who have worked with me, to whom I am grateful. Our goal has been to “give psychology away” and to use psychology to improve the lives of people in Canada. The present article outlines our efforts, including the contributions of countless volunteers, to give psychology away and some of the lessons learned. The Foundation developed programs promoting mental and emotional well-being and raised several million dollars to make them possible. Our many publications have been translated into several languages. The current signature brand is Strong Minds Strong Kids, Psychology Canada. There is much work yet to be done. The Foundation represents psychology broadly, and all of us involved are grateful for the support and commitment that so many have given. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)
