The Joys of "External Otology"

The field of Otolaryngology –Head and Neck surgery covers far more than its label as a “specialty” implies. Our profession deals with all ages from infants to the aged and deals with problems as complex as skull base tumors, airway reconstruction in newborns, resection of large tumors of the head and neck, and reconstruc tion with microvascular tissue transfer. Indeed, the depth and breadth of this specialty are so daunting to many of our residents, they seek even further specialization through fellowships, often adding two or more years onto their training to become an “expert” in one area of our complex specia lty.
