Molecular alterations of follicular cell-derived thyroid neoplasms

Considerable knowledge about the molecular pathogenesis of follicular cell-derived thyroid tumors has been acquired in the last decade using next generation sequencing technique. This review summarizes the correlation among molecular profiles, histopathologic classification, and clinical behaviors of follicular cell-derived thyroid neoplasms. RAS-like molecular signatures are seen in well-differentiated follicular-patterned neoplasms and poorly differentiated thyroid carcinoma; BRAFV600E-like profile prevails papillary thyroid carcinoma (particularly classic and tall cell subtypes) and high grade differentiated thyroid carcinoma; whereas the oncocytic neoplasms (adenoma, carcinoma and oncocytic poorly differentiated thyroid carcinoma) are non-BRAF/non-RAS tumors.
