Discontinuation of contraception in perimenopausal women – variations in clinical practice

Introduction: The perimenopause period is described as the transition between the fertile and unfertile stage. Postmenopausal state is diagnosed clinically after 12 months of amenorrhea. Although fertility greatly decreases after age 50, unwanted pregnancies have been described until the age of 59. Contraceptive counselling is particularly challenging in this age group due to difficulty in the interpretation of amenorrhea in hormonal contraceptive users and different approaches on the timing of discontinuation of contraception.
