Hours of Boredom, Punctuated by Moments of Sheer Terror

It is unclear exactly who gets credit for this quote, but it has been used to describe warfare, flying, poker, playing outfield in baseball, anesthesiology, and …team coverage. This phrase came to mind when I was covering a gymnastics event at a local university several years ago. Our program was devoid of both scholarships and talent, and we were competing against some of the better teams in our region. Needless to say, I was nervous every time one of ou r gymnasts ran down the ramp to the pommel horse, and there were plenty of “miss-mounts.” The one thing that can reduce the risk of sheer terror in this arena is something we can borrow from the Boy Scout Motto: Be Prepared!
