Uncertainties and Controversies in Axillary Management of Patients with Breast Cancer
Management of the axilla in patients with early breast cancer (BC) has undergone major changes in the last few years due to multimodality approaches and the declining status of axillary surgery as a staging procedure. This process of surgical de-escalation began when sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy replaced axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) as standard of care in patients with node-negative breast cancer.[1] The progressive reduction of surgical intervention continues following publication of practice changing trials, such as ACOSOG Z0011, IBCSG 23-01 and EORTC AMAROS.
