Assessing the Quality Improvement Classification System (QICS)

In this issue of JAMA Otolaryngology –Head& Neck Surgery, Stone et al report their development and initial validation of a novel quality improvement classification system, the Quality Improvement Classification System (QICS). Their system was designed to score patient safety events that were being presented at their Quality Assurance Conference (ie, their institution ’s morbidity and mortality [M&M] conference). The QICS grades events from level 1 (circumstances of events with capacity to harm the patient but where no harm occurred, ie, near miss) to level 7 (death of a patient). Their goal was to provide a standardized quantification system to analyze and report patient safety events.
