Characteristics of faculty mentoring in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Future of Nursing Scholars Program

As nurse scientist faculty continue to retire in the U.S. and the nurse faculty shortage persists, there remains a crucial need to fill these positions with new Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) graduates (McSweeney  et al., 2020; Redeker, 2021). While the overall number of doctorally prepared nurses continues to rise, this increase is predominantly achieved by graduates from Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs. DNP graduations were about nine times higher than that of PhD graduates in 2019 (American A ssociation of Colleges of Nursing, 2021).
