Surgical site infections

Surgical site infections (SSIs) are infections at the site of surgery within 30 or 90  days of the operation, depending on the procedure. They are a significant complication of both elective and emergency surgery and are the second highest cause of hospital-acquired infections. They have a huge cost to the NHS and lead to increased morbidity and mortality. Significant research has b een done to find the causes and help create solutions, culminating in international guidelines published by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2016.
