Demystifying the National Institutes of Health diversity supplement: Mentee and mentor experiences and recommendations

Investigators from diverse backgrounds are underrepresented in research, a problem compounded by associated funding gaps, race, and ethnicity (National Institutes of Health [NIH], 2021). A 2011 report revealed that the funding rate for R01 applications from Black/African American investigators was 10% lower than for all other racial groups after controlling for applicants ’ educational background, country of origin, training, previous research awards, publication record, and institutional characteristics (Ginther et al., 2011).
