Global Perspective in Contemporary Orthognathic Surgery

Dentofacial deformity affects patients ’ health, function, aesthetics, and self-esteem. The surgical correction of the deformed facial skeleton and the overlying soft tissue brings improvement to these important aspects of patients. In the past two decades, orthognathic surgery has further matured in the techniques as well as the treat ment concept. Various forms of dentofacial deformity require specific considerations in surgical planning. There are some deformities that are more prevalent in certain ethnic groups, which require adjunctive procedures for their correction.
