The Impact of COVID-19 on Systems of Care for Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs

The COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented challenges for children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN) and their families. The unpredictable nature of the virus constantly changed the playing field that spanned healthcare, education, family, and community systems. For decades, CYSHCN and their families and caregivers have relied on all four of these systems to meet their myriad and often complex needs. Before COVID-19 children and families faced gaps in these systems and challenges in coordinating care between individuals and professionals across systems.
