Clinical utility of pathology data

The practice of pathology is constantly evolving, and much of what we do is data-driven. Precision medicine requires precision pathology. This encompasses a wide remit of modalities that have diagnostic, therapeutic and prognostic ramifications. This has necessitated a greater depth and scope of reporting by pathologists. The resultant information deluge has been organised into checklists that attempt to achieve a similar standard across countries and organisations. These guideline templates are being updated and refined to incorporate the ever-lengthening list of parameters and information that is generated. Byproducts of this more detailed, exhaustive information trail are stresses placed on healthcare services to provide a myriad of sophisticated tests and the pathologist to provide such information, all in the pursuit of ‘standard of care’.
