A framework for addressing health inequities in sexual and gender diverse populations by nurses
Sexual and gender diverse (SGD) populations, commonly referred to as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and/or asexual (LGBTQIA+) people represent roughly 18 million (5.6%) of the United States (U.S.) population (Jones, 2021). The umbrella term SGD includes individuals (a) whose sexual or romantic behaviors focus primarily on members of the same sex or both sexes; (b) whose gender identity transcend traditionally defined binary gender categories of male and female or from their sex assigned at birth (transgender, gender non-conforming, gender non-binary); and/or c) who identify themselves as “queer,” “bi-curious,” “pansexual,” or “asexual,” or use no label for their sexual orientation.
