Introducing OpenAlex: an open and complete index of the global research system

Bibliographic indices and Scientific Knowledge Graphs (SKGs) like Web of Science, Google Scholar, and Crossref are increasingly relied upon to support research management, literature search, and in-silico knowledge discovery tools. However, existing systems have been either a) relatively complete but closed, or b) relatively open and incomplete. OpenAlex is a new SKG that is both more complete and more open than existing tools. Built on a fully open-source codebase, its CC0-licensed dataset is available via a snapshot or API, and it is supported by a self-sustaining nonprofit. Moreover, by combining machine learning (harvesting, parsing and deduplicating messy freetext data) with structured datasets (from sources like Wikidata, ROR, and ORCID), OpenAlex boasts coverage of works, authors, journals, and institutions that is superior to most existing commercial tools. This talk will discuss the development, functionality, roadmap, and limitations of OpenAlex. For more information go tohttps://openalex.org/Air date: 6/9/2022 3:00:00 PM
