E-Patient Update: Reducing Your Patients ’ Security Anxiety
Even if you’re not a computer-savvy person, these days you can hardly miss the fact that healthcare data is a desirable target for cyber-criminals. After all, over the past few years, healthcare data breaches have been in the news almost every day, with some affecting millions of consumers. As a result, many patients have become at least a bit afraid of interacting with health data online. Some are afraid that data stored on their doctor or hospital’s server will be compromised, some are afraid to manage their data on their own, and others don’t even know what they’re worried about – but they’re scared to get ...

A new focus: How to become empowered patients
Attention, kind readers. After years of doing this blog in fits and starts — particularly the two-year gap while I was essentially prohibited by a full-time employer from writing about health IT here or anywhere else but that company’s site — I have decided to refocus on healthcare consumers rather than industry insiders. The “Meaningful HIT News” name itself has become dated, given that the Meaningful Use program from which this blog takes its name has evolved and kind of fallen out of favor. For those not up on the lingo, “meaningful use” is the standard healthcare providers must meet to...

Healthcare CIOs Focus On Optimizing EMRs
Few technical managers struggle with more competing priorities than healthcare CIOs. But according to a recent survey, they’re pretty clear what they have to accomplish over the next few years, and optimizing EMRs has leapt to the top of the to-do list. The survey, which was conducted by consulting firm KPMG in collaboration with CHIME, found that 38 percent of CHIME members surveyed saw EMR optimization as their #1 priority for capital investment over the next three years.  To gather results, KPMG surveyed 122 CHIME members about their IT investment plans. In addition to EMR optimization, top investment priorities ...

Building Unity Farm Sanctuary - Fifth Week of March 2017
We continue to refine the sanctuary buildings, prepare the new animal care areas, and keep our creatures healthy.Sweetie, our 18 year old Welsh Pony developed a sore on her right lip.  Using my human medicine training I inspected it for abscess formation and drained it, while also applying local antibiotics.  It did not heal this week, so we asked the horse vet to take a look.  It turns out that when horses have tooth abscesses in the lower jaw, they develop drainage tracts in their lips.  Tooth abscesses in the upper jaw drain into the sinuses and out the nose.  She ’s now on syst...

It Is Good To See The Value Of Telemedicine Being Confirmed Over The Long Term.
This appeared last week.UC Davis tracks 18 years of telemedicine and finds benefits beyond the bottom lineRather than only looking at how the technology reduces costs and improves outcomes, researches focused on related time, transportation and environmental factors. By Heather MackMarch 23, 2017 10:58 AM Telehealth use is growing but the question of whether the technology reduces costs and improves outcomes remains a point of contention. Whereas the bulk of such analysis focuses on the bottom line of health plans and employers, researchers at University of California Davis instead are looking on how it impacts pati...

Healthcare Scene Supporters
I have to feel pretty lucky to be a healthcare IT blogger. Certainly it’s a lot of work, but it’s also a lot of fun. What’s amazing to me is that just on this EMR and HIPAA blog, I’ve published over 2750 posts and generated over 12 million views. If you look at the broader Healthcare Scene network we’ve published over 11,000 blog posts, generated 18 million pageviews, 55,000 email subscribers, and have over 72k Twitter followers. That’s insane for me to think about when I look back on what started as a fun side project one weekend over 11 years ago. Today I’m feeling a lot of grati...

Early Experiences with Ambient Listening Devices (Alexa and Google Home)
BIDMC has a long tradition of testing speculative technologies with the notion that breakthroughs often require tolerance for failure.  For example, we ’ve embraced blockchain in healthcare because we believe public ledgers have promise to unify medical records across institutions.Over the past few months, we ’ve developed healthcare applications for Alexa, Amazon’s ambient listening device that combines natural language processing and easy to use application program interfaces.  We have also tried Google Home. Here ’s our experience thus far.1. We ’ve used Alexa in a pilot inpatient setting (n...

Use of AI and Machine Learning in Healthcare – #HITsm Chat Topic
We’re excited to share the topic and questions for this week’s #HITsm chat happening Friday, 3/31 at Noon ET (9 AM PT). This week’s chat will be hosted by Amy Landry (@amyinmaine) from HBI Solutions (@HBI_Solutions) on the topic of “Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Healthcare”. Will doctors and nurses be replaced by robots? While this is unlikely, the use of artificial intelligence is increasingly changing the way in which they deliver care. Up until just a few years ago the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare was rare, confined mostly to research and exploratory pilot programs. Bu...

There ’s a healthcare lesson for people in the behavior of two little dogs
We have two little dogs. Pepe is a 10-year old Shih Tzu/poodle and Coco is an 8-year old Shih Tzu /Bichon.  Pepe had been getting frailer and weaker throughout the Fall months. We thought this might be her last year with us. But her blood work in November showed that she has a thyroid problem. She now gets a daily medication and has more energy and no longer sleeps most of the day. The name Pepe (as in peppy) is fitting her again. (Source: Healthcare IT News Blog)
