Prosthesis Choice in Dialysis Patients Undergoing Mitral Valve Replacement
CONCLUSIONS: MVR in dialysis patients carries significant morbidity and increased mid-term mortality. Decreased life-expectancy should be considered in the tailoring of prosthesis choice to dialysis-dependent patients.PMID:37245789 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2023.05.015

Outcomes of Root Enlargement Versus Root Replacement for Aortic Stenosis
CONCLUSIONS: ARE and stentless xenograft ARR for aortic stenosis were associated with comparable postoperative complications, aortic valve reinterventions, freedom from readmission, and 5-year survival.PMID:36584836 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2022.12.027

Outcomes of Open v. Endovascular Repair of Descending Thoracic and Thoracoabdominal Aortic Aneurysms
CONCLUSIONS: Open repair of descending thoracic and thoracoabdominal aneurysms can achieve acceptable short-term outcomes with better intermediate-term outcomes than endovascular repair.PMID:34048754 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2021.04.100

The long-term impact of perioperative red blood transfusion on patients undergoing cardiac surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with perioperative PRBC transfusions have increased operative and long-term mortality and hospital readmissions. Total units of PRBC transfused was directly associated with mortality and readmissions. PMID: 33171175 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Long-Term Single Centre Outcomes of Patients with Chronic Renal Dialysis Undergoing Cardiac Surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: Cardiac surgery in DD-CRF patients is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Interestingly, overall mortality was mainly none cardiac-related, where elderly patients or those presented with CHF had the worst life expectancy. However, subsequent kidney transplantation positively impact long-term survival in such patients. PMID: 31563486 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Aortic Valve Replacement in Bioprosthetic Failure:Insights from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons National Database.
CONCLUSIONS: The number of patients undergoing SAVR for degenerated bioprosthesis is decreasing in U.S, particularly among older and high-risk patients. These trends may reflect the adoption of valve-in-valve transcatheter aortic valve replacement for degenerated bioprosthesis after its FDA approval in 2015. Early Outcomes after Thoracoabdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair with Hypothermic Circulatory Arrest.
CONCLUSIONS: Our extended experience with this technique confirms its safety and effectiveness when used on a routine basis. The rates of spinal cord injury and permanent renal failure are among the lowest reported in the literature. Particularly favorable outcomes were observed in younger patients and those undergoing elective operations. PMID: 31085168 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Preoperative Venoarterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Slashes Risk Score in Advanced Structural Heart Disease.
CONCLUSIONS: ECMO can be used as a bridge to heart valve or septal defect surgery in severely decompensated patients. Through recovery of end-organ function, ECMO may allow surgical correction of structural heart disease in patients considered inoperable or convert a salvage situation to an elective operation. Does Surgical Ablation Energy Source Affect Long-Term Success of the Concomitant Cox Maze Procedure?
CONCLUSIONS: Concomitant CM procedures performed with cryothermal energy alone or combined with bipolar radiofrequency ablation are safe and exceedingly effective. The association of cryothermal energy alone with higher rates of sinus rhythm and stroke reduction should be investigated further. PMID: 28577848 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Open Repair of Thoracoabdominal Aortic Aneurysm in Patients 50 Years Old and  Younger.
CONCLUSIONS: Early outcomes of open TAAA repair were excellent for patients 50 years old or younger, despite the fact that these patients typically required extensive repairs. PMID: 27938888 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Outcomes of Dialysis-Dependent Patients After Cardiac Operations in a Single-Center Experience of 483 Patients.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with DD CRF undergoing cardiac operations have high perioperative and medium-term mortality, particularly in the presence of combined aortic and mitral valve pathologic conditions, active endocarditis, and poor left ventricular function. PMID: 27938884 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Aortic Valve Replacement in the Moderately Elevated Risk Patient: A Population-Based Analysis of Outcomes.
CONCLUSIONS: This population-based contemporary assessment suggests moderate-risk patients undergoing AVR experience favorable outcomes. Although increasing PROM is important in preoperative evaluation of risk, preexisting pulmonary hypertension and indication for operation are among other factors that should be considered as TAVR expands into this group of patients. Contemporary Outcomes of Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting Among Patients With Insulin-Treated and Non-Insulin-Treated Diabetes.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with diabetes undergoing CABG have substantially increased risk of major adverse events. Patients with ITDM represent an especially high-risk group. PMID: 26319487 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
