Women who take a newer version of birth control pills have a doubled risk of developing potentially fatal blood clots, according to a new study published in the British medical journal BMJ. Venous thromboembolism is a serious condition that encompasses both deep vein thrombosis -- when a person develops a blood clot in the legs -- and pulmonary embolism, in which the clot travels to the lungs and obstructs breathing.
