Comparison Between Healthcare-Associated and Community-Acquired Infective Endocarditis at Tertiary Care Hospitals in Japan.
CONCLUSIONS: HAIE has different clinical characteristics and causative microorganisms, as well as worse prognosis, than CIE. Preventive strategies, and the prompt and appropriate identification of HAIE may improve the outcome of infective endocarditis. PMID: 32132310 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Lipoprotein(a) and Cardiovascular Diseases - Revisited.
Lipoprotein(a) and Cardiovascular Diseases - Revisited. Circ J. 2020 Apr 24;: Authors: Jang AY, Han SH, Sohn IS, Oh PC, Koh KK Abstract Two decades ago, it was recognized that lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) concentrations were elevated in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, the importance of Lp(a) was not strongly established due to a lack of both Lp(a)-lowering therapy and evidence that reducing Lp(a) levels improves CVD risk. Recent advances in clinical and genetic research have revealed the crucial role of Lp(a) in the pathogenesis of CVD. Mendelian randomization studies have shown that ...

Heart Failure in Atrial Fibrillation - An Update on Clinical and Echocardiographic Implications.
Heart Failure in Atrial Fibrillation - An Update on Clinical and Echocardiographic Implications. Circ J. 2020 Jul 08;: Authors: Taniguchi N, Miyasaka Y, Suwa Y, Harada S, Nakai E, Shiojima I Abstract Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained arrhythmia in adults and has unfavorable consequences such as stroke, heart failure (HF), and death. HF is the most common adverse event following AF and the leading cause of death. Therefore, identifying the association between AF and HF is important to establish risk stratification for HF in AF. Recent studies suggested that left atrial and ventric...

Periprocedural Predictors of New-Onset Conduction Abnormalities After Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement.
CONCLUSIONS: Computed tomography assessment of membranous septal anatomy and implantation depth predicted CAs after TAVR with new-generation valves. Future studies are required to identify whether adjustment of the implantation depth can reduce the risk of CAs and adverse clinical outcomes. PMID: 32879221 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Dapagliflozin Influences Ventricular Hemodynamics and Exercise-Induced Pulmonary Hypertension in Type 2 Diabetes Patients - A Randomized Controlled Trial.
CONCLUSIONS: Dapagliflozin significantly improved RVSP and LVFP during exercise in patients with T2DM and cardiovascular risk, which may contribute to favorable effects on heart failure. PMID: 32921680 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Current Understanding of the Role of Frailty in Cardiovascular Disease.
Abstract The elderly population is increasing because of increasing life expectancy, and the prevalence of frailty increases with age. Frailty commonly coexists with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), such as coronary artery disease (CAD), heart failure (HF), aortic stenosis (AS), and atrial fibrillation (AF). Frail patients who undergo revascularization for CAD have higher complication rates; those with HF have a high prevalence of poor outcomes, and those with AF are vulnerable to increased stroke incidence. Moreover, frailty and asymptomatic severe AS were independent factors for mortality. The presence of frailty...

Metabolically Healthy Obesity and the Risk of Cardiovascular Disease in the General Population - Analysis of a Nationwide Epidemiological Database.
CONCLUSIONS: Among individuals with no metabolic disorders, MHO alone did not significantly increase the subsequent CVD risk. However, individuals with comorbid MHO and abdominal obesity had a higher risk of myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, heart failure, and atrial fibrillation, suggesting the prognostic importance of abdominal obesity in subjects with MHO.
