Today the New England Journal of Medicine has published a Spanish study comparing two versions of the Mediterranean diet with a low fat diet and the result is important news if you are interested in reducing your risk of heart disease and stroke. They compared a Mediterranean diet that emphasized extra virgin olive oil, a Mediterranean diet that emphasized nuts and a low fat diet. The Mediterranean diets were the big winners; they reduced the risk of the combination of heart attack, stroke or death from cardiovascular causes by about 30%!
