When the cupboard is bare: Impact of low pay revealed by conference
On a busy opening day of UNISON’s women’s conference – held virtually because of the continuing pandemic – delegates worked hard to ensure they have every chance of getting through the entire agenda.
Irene Graham from Northern Ireland told delegates about that region’s relaunch of the Feminist Recover Plan, which highlights the effects of both the pandemic and Brexit on women.
Conference voted to support the region’s plan and called on the national committee to use it as a model to shape its future work.

Ditching masks at a stroke is too much too soon
Responding to the Prime Minister’s announcement ending rules requiring face coverings in enclosed public spaces, UNISON assistant general secretary Jon Richards said today (Monday):

Blog: We must stop the government removing your rights without debate, oversight or a vote
Yesterday the government published the “Reform Bill”, which outlines how EU legislation will be converted into UK law.
Like many organisations, UNISON has real concerns about the legislation, in particular that it places too much power in the hands of the government and far too little power in the hands of Parliament and the people.

Brexit cannot be an excuse to trash our rights at work
Last night MPs held their first debate on the terms of Britain’s exit from the EU. Unsurprisingly given recent events, Article 50 was high on the agenda. But crucially, the debate also revolved around the rights at work that we enjoy as part of our EU membership.
Workplace rights was at the heart of UNISON’s campaign to keep Britain in the EU. We may have lost that argument, but our concerns remain. Councils still insisting on 15 minute homecare visits
UNISON has revealed today that 74% of local authorities in England are still limiting homecare visits for their elderly, ill and disabled residents to just 15 minutes.
The report – Suffering Alone at Home – is based on an online survey of 1,100 homecare workers and data obtained from a Freedom of Information request (FoI) to the 152 local authorities in England that commission social care visits.
