Carotid artery stenosis with a high-intensity signal plaque on time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography and association with evidence of intraplaque hypoxia.
CONCLUSIONS Plaques with high-intensity signals on TOF MRA were associated with IPH and evidence of intraplaque hypoxia. This fact may represent an opportunity to establish novel therapeutic agents targeting intraplaque hypoxia. PMID: 27367236 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Low flow velocity in the middle cerebral artery predicting infarction after bypass surgery in adult moyamoya disease.
CONCLUSIONS A low MFV in the ipsilateral MCA may predict postrevascularization infarction. Bypass surgery for MMD appears to be safe in early-stage MMD. Results of TCD ultrasonography provide clinical data on the hemodynamics in MMD patients before and after revascularization. PMID: 27257840 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

A leap forward in the endovascular management of acute basilar artery occlusion since the appearance of stent retrievers: a single-center comparative study.
CONCLUSIONS The latest devices have improved the effectiveness of mechanical thrombectomy in acute BAO. Their use in further studies may help demonstrate a benefit in the endovascular management of acute BAO. PMID: 27257830 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Impact of subclinical coronary artery disease on the clinical outcomes of carotid endarterectomy.
CONCLUSIONS Patients with subclinical CAD can undergo CEA with acceptable short- and long-term outcomes provided they receive selective coronary revascularization and optimal perioperative medical treatment. PMID: 27257829 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Clinical utility of a screening protocol for blunt cerebrovascular injury using computed tomography angiography.
CONCLUSIONS The results of this study suggest that a CTA screening protocol for BCVI may be of clinical benefit with possible reduction in ischemic complications. The treatment of BCVI with antiplatelet agents appears to be safe. PMID: 27104846 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Clipping of previously coiled cerebral aneurysms: efficacy, safety, and predictors in a cohort of 111 patients.
CONCLUSIONS Surgical clipping is safe and effective in treating recurrent, previously coiled cerebral aneurysms. Aneurysm size, location, and number of previous coiling procedures are important factors to consider in the management of these aneurysms. PMID: 26894462 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Very late ischemic complications in flow-diverter stents: a retrospective analysis of a single-center series.
CONCLUSIONS Very late ischemic complications after FDS treatment were observed in 3.5% of the cases in the authors' series, some of which occurred as late as more than 1 year after placement. PMID: 26824382 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Surgical outcomes following encephaloduroarteriosynangiosis in adult moyamoya disease associated with Type 2 diabetes.
CONCLUSIONS Encephaloduroarteriosynangiosis is an efficacious treatment for adult patients with MMD. Patients with T2DM could achieve better collateral circulation and clinical improvement following surgery. PMID: 26745491 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Submaximal angioplasty for symptomatic intracranial atherosclerosis: a prospective Phase I study.
CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates the safety of the submaximal angioplasty technique, with no permanent periprocedural complications in 24 treated patients. PMID: 26745485 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Treatment of ruptured complex and large/giant ruptured cerebral aneurysms by acute coiling followed by staged flow diversion.
CONCLUSIONS Staged treatment of ruptured complex and giant intracranial aneurysms with coiling in the acute phase and flow-diverter treatment following recovery from SAH is both safe and effective. In this series, no cases of rebleeding occurred during the interval between coiling and flow diversion. This strategy should be considered as a valid option in patients presenting with these challenging ruptured aneurysms. PMID: 26654182 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Contemporary carotid imaging: from degree of stenosis to plaque vulnerability.
Abstract Carotid artery stenosis is a well-established risk factor of ischemic stroke, contributing to up to 10%-20% of strokes or transient ischemic attacks. Many clinical trials over the last 20 years have used measurements of carotid artery stenosis as a means to risk stratify patients. However, with improvements in vascular imaging techniques such as CT angiography and MR angiography, ultrasonography, and PET/CT, it is now possible to risk stratify patients, not just on the degree of carotid artery stenosis but also on how vulnerable the plaque is to rupture, resulting in ischemic stroke. These imaging techniq...

Encephaloduroarteriosynangiosis for adult intracranial arterial steno-occlusive disease: long-term single-center experience with 107 operations.
CONCLUSIONS EDAS is well tolerated in adults with MMD and ICASD and improves collateral circulation to territories at risk. The rates of stroke after EDAS are lower than those reported with other treatments, including intensive medical therapy in patients with ICASD. PMID: 26067617 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Angiographic, hemodynamic, and histological changes in an animal model of brain arteriovenous malformations treated with Gamma Knife radiosurgery.
CONCLUSIONS GKS produced morphological, angiographic, and histological changes in the model of AVM as early as 6 weeks after treatment. These results support the use of this model for studying methods to enhance radiation response in AVMs. PMID: 25884263 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Emergent intracranial surgical embolectomy in conjunction with carotid endarterectomy for acute internal carotid artery terminus embolic occlusion and tandem occlusion of the cervical carotid artery due to plaque rupture.
Abstract Acute internal carotid artery (ICA) terminus occlusion is associated with extremely poor functional outcomes or mortality, especially when it is caused by plaque rupture of the cervical ICA with engrafted thrombus that elongates and extends into the ICA terminus. The goal of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of surgical embolectomy in conjunction with carotid endarterectomy (CEA) for acute ICA terminus occlusion associated with cervical plaque rupture resulting in tandem occlusion. A retrospective review of medical records was performed. Clinical and radiographic characteristics were eval...

64-detector CT angiography within 24 hours after carotid endarterectomy and correlation with postoperative stroke.
CONCLUSIONS CTA within 24 hours of CEA demonstrates characteristic anatomical findings. CCA step-offs and ECA flaps are relatively common and clinically insignificant, whereas ICA/CCA flaps and thrombi are less frequently seen and are associated with postoperative stroke/TIA.
