Isolated Tricuspid Operations: Society of Thoracic Surgeons Adult Cardiac Surgery Database Analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Isolated tricuspid repair was associated with lower adjusted mortality and morbidities than replacement. Beating heart operation was associated with lower adjusted major morbidities. Pre-operative MELD scores may identify high-risk patients, and referral to higher volume centers may help improve outcomes.PMID:36696939 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2022.12.041

Distal Aortic Progression After Hemi- Zones 1-3 Arch Replacement in Acute Type A Aortic Dissection
CONCLUSIONS: There was no significant difference in long-term survival, distal aorta growth, or reoperation rate for distal aortic aneurysm after Hemiarch or Zones 1-3 arch replacement. Patient-specific arch replacement strategies may be utilized rather than defaulting to aggressive arch replacement for all ATAAD patients.PMID:36368349 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2022.10.035

The long-term impact of perioperative red blood transfusion on patients undergoing cardiac surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with perioperative PRBC transfusions have increased operative and long-term mortality and hospital readmissions. Total units of PRBC transfused was directly associated with mortality and readmissions. PMID: 33171175 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Less-Invasive Aortic Valve Replacement: Trends and Outcomes from the STS Database.
CONCLUSIONS: LI-AVR is associated with a similar operative mortality and postoperative stroke rate compared to FS. LI-AVRS should be served as a benchmark for comparison between TAVR and sAVR in low risk patients. PMID: 32835750 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Impact of Hematologic Malignancies on Outcome of Cardiac Surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: Although late survival is reduced in patients with hematologic malignancies, early outcomes are generally similar to matched controls. Thus, operation should not be withheld in patients with a diagnosis of hematologic malignancy who would benefit from cardiac procedures. PMID: 32822668 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Very long-term outcome of Minimally Invasive Direct Coronary Artery Bypass.
CONCLUSIONS: Very long-term clinical outcome of MIDCAB is satisfactory in terms of survival and freedom from MACCE. MIDCAB significantly reduces in-hospital stay and blood transfusions when compared to full sternotomy bypass surgery on left descending coronary artery and appears to effectively improve prognosis in terms of cardiac- and all-causes events. Implications of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Carriage on Cardiac Surgical Outcomes.
CONCLUSIONS: MRSA carriers undergoing cardiac surgery are not at higher risk for mortality or SSI and can expect outcomes similar to those of non-carriers. Higher rates of postoperative MRSA infection and septicemia among carriers, although still very low, support the need for selective preoperative screening and prophylaxis when possible. National Outcomes of Surgical Embolectomy for Acute Pulmonary Embolism.
CONCLUSIONS: In this contemporary, real-world study, mortality occurred in 19.8% of patients undergoing surgical embolectomy for acute pulmonary embolism. This represents a significant improvement compared to traditional outcomes and supports the role of surgery in the multidisciplinary treatment of this high-risk condition. Preoperative anemia and outcomes in cardiovascular surgery: systematic review and meta-analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative anemia is associated with adverse outcomes following cardiac surgery. These findings support the addition of preoperative anemia to future risk prediction models, and as a target for risk modification. PMID: 31233718 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The Impact of Preoperative Clopidogrel on Outcomes Following Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting.
CONCLUSIONS: CABG can be safely performed in patients with recent Clopidogrel exposure with no increased risk of early or late mortality. However, CABG should be delayed for at least 5 days if clinically feasible to minimize transfusions and reoperation risk. In patients with more urgent indications, delaying CABG at least 3 days can mitigate but not eliminate the increased bleeding risk. PMID: 31039353 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The Buffalo Trunk Technique for Aortic Arch Reconstruction.
CONCLUSIONS: The benefits of a hybrid approach to the frozen elephant trunk can be attained without the complex industry available technology as presented by our technique, the Buffalo Trunk. Evolution of this approach has facilitated shorter circulatory arrest time, and subsequently overall decreased operative times without compromising outcomes. Hybrid Coronary Revascularization Versus On-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting.
CONCLUSIONS: For selected patients, HCR is associated with a faster postoperative recovery as well as similar short-term and long-term outcomes when compared with standard on-pump CABG. PMID: 29571730 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Preoperative Hematocrit Is a Powerful Predictor of Adverse Outcomes in Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery: A Report From The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Adult Cardiac Surgery Database.
CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative HCT is a powerful independent predictor of perioperative mortality as well as renal failure and deep sternal wound infection in patients undergoing isolated primary CABG operations. These findings should prompt investigation of strategies to increase preoperative HCT. PMID: 24055236 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
