Sex-based outcomes after coronary artery bypass grafting.
CONCLUSIONS: Sex was not an independent predictor of long-term MACE after CABG in this population-based cohort study. Men had however higher long-term all-cause mortality and women higher risk of myocardial infarction. Long-term outcomes should be accounted for when considering sex as a risk factor for CABG. Initial Clinical Experience with Mitral Valve Translocation for Secondary Mitral Regurgitation.
CONCLUSIONS: Mitral valve translocation creates a large surface of coaptation and effectively corrects FMR. Further study is needed to demonstrate the long-term durability and clinical utility of this operation. PMID: 33440174 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The Specialized Donor Care Facility (SDCF) Model and Advances in Management of Thoracic Organ Donors.
CONCLUSIONS: Lack of high-quality prospective evidence results in conflicting practices across organ procurement organizations and best practices remain controversial. Future studies should focus on prospective, randomized investigations to evaluate donor management strategies. The SDCF model fosters a collaborative environment that encourages academic inquiry and is an ideal setting for these investigations. PMID: 33421385 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Postoperative atrial fibrillation after cardiac surgery: a meta-analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: POAF is common after cardiac surgery and is associated with significantly higher rates of both short- and long-term stroke and mortality as well as increased hospital stay. Differences in hazard for long-term survival may be due to the underlying pathophysiological risk factors for POAF which differ by surgical procedure. Outcomes with Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia after Cardiac Surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: Although uncommon, HIT is a highly morbid and potentially lethal complication, which should reinforce the importance of timely recognition and treatment of this adverse outcome. PMID: 33307073 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Hyponatremia: an overlooked risk factor associated with adverse outcomes after cardiac surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative hyponatremia is relatively common and is associated with adverse short- and long-term outcomes after cardiac surgery. Preoperative hyponatremia can be used independently from standard risk factors to identify high risk patients for cardiac surgery. PMID: 33080237 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

First-in-Human Use of the COOK Hybrid Frozen Elephant Trunk Graft: The Canadian Experience.
CONCLUSIONS: The Cook hybrid stent-graft device provides encouraging mid-term results in a high-risk cohort. This novel graft is simple to deploy, may be customized to patients' anatomy in elective cases, eases arch reconstruction and allows versatility in the choice of arch grafts. The Impact of Race on Outcomes of Revascularization for Multivessel Coronary Artery Disease.
CONCLUSIONS: Black patients with MVCAD have a higher comorbidity burden and undergo PCI at higher rates. After adjusting for baseline differences, black patients still had higher rates of PCI utilization and long-term stroke. It is possible that a significant portion of racial disparities in MVCAD are driven by differences in baseline risk, however, there is evidence of possible racial bias with regards to revascularization strategies. Is the use of BITA vs SITA grafting safe and beneficial in octogenarians?
CONCLUSIONS: This study shows equal long-term survival for BITA and SITA grafting in octogenarians. BITA is an acceptable alternative to SITA grafting in low-risk octogenarians and in the presence of calcified aorta or poor quality of saphenous vein graft. Outcomes of tricuspid valve operation at the time of pericardiectomy for constrictive pericarditis.
CONCLUSIONS: Concomitant tricuspid valve operation for regurgitation can be done without increased operative mortality during pericardiectomy for constrictive pericarditis. Operation appears protective against long-term mortality, residual tricuspid regurgitation, and right ventricular enlargement. PMID: 32896543 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Less-Invasive Aortic Valve Replacement: Trends and Outcomes from the STS Database.
CONCLUSIONS: LI-AVR is associated with a similar operative mortality and postoperative stroke rate compared to FS. LI-AVRS should be served as a benchmark for comparison between TAVR and sAVR in low risk patients. PMID: 32835750 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Impact of Hematologic Malignancies on Outcome of Cardiac Surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: Although late survival is reduced in patients with hematologic malignancies, early outcomes are generally similar to matched controls. Thus, operation should not be withheld in patients with a diagnosis of hematologic malignancy who would benefit from cardiac procedures. PMID: 32822668 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The Use of Frailty Scoring to Predict Early Physical Activity Levels Following Cardiac Surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights the predictive ability of objective frailty scoring and PA measurement for outcomes after cardiac surgery. This has important implications for surgical risk-stratification and personalized post-operative planning. PMID: 32818541 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Cerebral Embolism Following Transcarotid TAVR:Factors Associated with Ipsilateral Ischemic Burden.
CONCLUSIONS: Carotid artery access for TAVR was associated with a higher number of cerebral ischemic lesions in the ipsilateral (vs. contralateral) cerebral hemisphere. The use of a larger sheath/delivery system (≥18F) was associated with an increased ipsilateral ischemic burden. PMID: 32710845 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
