Direct Axillary Artery Cannulation for Aortic Surgery: Lessons from Contemporary Experiences
CONCLUSIONS: Direct AX cannulation for thoracic aortic repair is safe and carries a low rate of vascular injury, especially in elective cases. Our direct cannulation technique, which includes not inserting a cannula deeper than 3 cm, seems to be safe in not occluding the vertebral artery.PMID:35292261 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2022.02.048

Endoscopic vs Open Vein Harvest in Drug-Eluting Stents or Bypass Surgery for Left Main Disease Trial
CONCLUSIONS: Ischemia-driven revascularization at 5 years was higher in the EVH group. EVH and OVH patients had similar rates of graft stenosis or occlusion, and composite of death, stroke, or MI at 5 years.PMID:35283098 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2021.12.079

Advancing Quality Metrics for Durable Left Ventricular Assist Device Implant: Analysis of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons' Intermacs Database
CONCLUSIONS: This study is among the first to report substantial interhospital variability in performance for hospitals implanting durable LVADs. These findings support the need to: (1) report hospital-level performance (mortality, composite); and (2) undertake benchmarking activities to reduce unwarranted variability in outcomes.PMID:35176258 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2022.01.031

Changes in Controllable Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting Practice for White and Black Americans
CONCLUSIONS: CABG metrics of LIMA utilization and optimal medical therapy have improved over time and are similar despite patient race. Black Americans experience less frequent multi-arterial grafting and greater discharge beta-blocker prescription. Identifying changes in controllable CABG quality practices across races supports a continued focus on standardizing such efforts.PMID:35093386 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2021.11.074

Five-year Outcomes of the COMMENCE Trial Investigating Aortic Valve Replacement with RESILIA Tissue
CONCLUSIONS: The safety and hemodynamic performance of this aortic bioprosthesis with RESILIA tissue through 5 years are encouraging, with clinically stable hemodynamics, minimal regurgitation, and no evidence of structural valve deterioration.PMID:35065065 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2021.12.058

Mid-Term Outcomes of Heart Transplantation in Children with Genetic Disorders
CONCLUSIONS: Despite more preoperative comorbidities, mid-term outcomes following heart transplant in children with genetic syndromes and disorders are promising.PMID:35007503 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2021.12.019

Triple-branched Stent Graft Implantation for Acute Non-A-non-B Aortic Dissection
CONCLUSIONS: TBSG implantation for acute non-A-non-B aortic dissection had a low incidence of mortality and morbidity, featuring good remodeling of the dissected aortic wall during follow-up. The early outcomes of this technique were satisfactory.PMID:34971594 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2021.11.059

Minimally Invasive versus Full Sternotomy for Isolated Aortic Valve Replacement in Low-risk Patients
CONCLUSIONS: For patients at low risk for isolated surgery, MI and FS approaches were associated with similar in-hospital and 1-year outcomes.PMID:34958771 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2021.11.048

Five-Year Outcomes of Concomitant Maze Procedure Using Nitrous Oxide versus Argon-Based Cryoablation
CONCLUSIONS: Both N2O- and argon gas-based cryoprobes showed similar rates of sinus rhythm maintenance and freedom from MACCEs at the 5-year follow-up. Both cryoprobes might have similar efficacy and safety in the arrested heart in the long term.PMID:34953787 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2021.11.036
