Five-Year Outcomes of Concomitant Maze Procedure Using Nitrous Oxide versus Argon-Based Cryoablation
CONCLUSIONS: Both N2O- and argon gas-based cryoprobes showed similar rates of sinus rhythm maintenance and freedom from MACCEs at the 5-year follow-up. Both cryoprobes might have similar efficacy and safety in the arrested heart in the long term.PMID:34953787 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2021.11.036

Competing Risks to Transplant in Bridging with Continuous Flow Left Ventricular Assist Devices
CONCLUSIONS: While device related-complications were significantly associated with decreased rates of transplant, CF-LVAD patients had excellent waitlist outcomes overall. In light of the 2018 allocation score change, the risk of complications should be taken into account when deciding whether to offer CF-LVAD as a bridge to transplant.PMID:34808111 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2021.09.079

Early Discharge After Minimally Invasive Aortic and Mitral Valve Surgery
CONCLUSIONS: In well-selected patients, early discharge after minimally invasive valve surgery was associated with lower costs but comparable postoperative outcomes. About one fifth of patients who remain in the hospital beyond postoperative day 3 may be candidates for earlier discharge.PMID:34419437 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2021.07.047

Aortic Annular Enlargement in the Elderly: Short and Long-Term Outcomes in the United States.
CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest annular enlargement during SAVR is associated with increased short-term risk in a Medicare population. Survival curves crossed after three years, which may portend a benefit in select patients. However, annular enlargement is still only done in the minority of patients who are at risk for PPM. The Impact of Race on Outcomes of Revascularization for Multivessel Coronary Artery Disease.
CONCLUSIONS: Black patients with MVCAD have a higher comorbidity burden and undergo PCI at higher rates. After adjusting for baseline differences, black patients still had higher rates of PCI utilization and long-term stroke. It is possible that a significant portion of racial disparities in MVCAD are driven by differences in baseline risk, however, there is evidence of possible racial bias with regards to revascularization strategies. Mid-term results after simultaneous carotid artery stenting and cardiac surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: In this small group of patients, the hybrid procedure was proved to be a safe and efficient way of treatment for patients with concomitant carotid and cardiac diseases. The low rate of perioperative complications and good midterm results are encouraging. PMID: 32247782 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Predictors and Outcomes of Ischemic Stroke After Cardiac Surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: Stroke is a devastating complication following cardiac surgery, which increases operative morbidity and mortality. Stroke with LVO was associated with worse survival. However, early intervention did not impart a survival benefit. PMID: 32199830 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

HVAD Cannula Position and Hemocompatibility-related Adverse Events.
CONCLUSIONS: HVAD cannula coronal angle was associated with reduced right ventricular function and HRAE. Prospective studies evaluating surgical techniques to ensure optimal device positioning and its effects on HRAEs are warranted. PMID: 32035046 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Long-Term Single Centre Outcomes of Patients with Chronic Renal Dialysis Undergoing Cardiac Surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: Cardiac surgery in DD-CRF patients is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Interestingly, overall mortality was mainly none cardiac-related, where elderly patients or those presented with CHF had the worst life expectancy. However, subsequent kidney transplantation positively impact long-term survival in such patients. PMID: 31563486 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Transcatheter and Surgical Aortic Valve Replacement in Patients with Recent Acute Heart Failure.
CONCLUSIONS: Recent AHF is associated with increased risk of mortality and morbidity after SAVR and TAVR. These findings suggest that AS patients should be referred for invasive treatment before the development of clinically evident heart failure. PMID: 31288017 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Survival Following Myectomy for Obstructive Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy-What Causes Late Mortality?
CONCLUSIONS: This study, using two independent sources to verify vital status and cause of mortality, confirms that survival following septal myectomy is excellent. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy was identified as the primary cause of death in less than 20%, with mortality in most patients unrelated to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
