Early Operation in Patients With Mitral Valve Infective Endocarditis and Acute Stroke Is Safe
Conclusions MV surgery for IE and acute stroke can be performed early with a low risk of postoperative neurologic complications. When indicated, surgical intervention for MV IE complicated by acute stroke should not be delayed.

ConclusionsAlthough there was no significant difference in clinically evident neurologic injury, this pilot study suggests that MHCA+ACP may be associated with a higher incidence of radiographic neurologic injury than DHCA+RCP in patients undergoing elective hemiarch replacement.

Cognition and Cerebral Infarction in Older Adults After Surgical Aortic Valve Replacement
ConclusionsIn high-risk, aged participants undergoing surgical AVR for aortic stenosis, post-operative cognitive dysfunction was surprisingly limited and was resolved by 1-year in most. Post-operative cognitive dysfunction at 4-6 weeks was associated with more and larger acute cerebral infarcts.

Impact of Aortic Atherosclerosis Burden on Outcomes of Surgical Aortic Valve Replacement
ConclusionsModerate/severe aortic atherosclerosis was associated with an increased risk of adverse events following SAVR. Epiaortic ultrasound may serve as a useful adjunct for identifying patients who may benefit from strategies to reduce atheroembolic complications during SAVR.

Impact of Pectus Excavatum on Cardiopulmonary Function
Conclusions The inspiratory HI and CI reflect the effect of pectus excavatum on cardiopulmonary function. The cardiopulmonary system reacts first with an increase in heart rate at anaerobic threshold, followed by a decrease in stroke volume at anaerobic threshold and maximum stroke volume. Increased severity of the deformity then leads to a decrease in cardiac output.

Moderate Ischemic Mitral Regurgitation After Posterolateral Myocardial Infarction in Sheep Alters Left Ventricular Shear but Not Normal Strain in the Infarct and Infarct Borderzone
Conclusions Moderate CIMR alters radial circumferential shear strain after posterolateral MI in sheep. Further studies are needed to determine the effect of shear strain on myocyte hypertrophy and the effect of mitral repair on myocardial strain.

Scimitar Syndrome Repair in Adults: Intermediate-Term Results Using an Extracardiac Conduit
Conclusions Correction of scimitar syndrome with an extracardiac conduit can be easily and safely performed in adults, with excellent intermediate-term durability, without graft thrombi or stenosis. This technique avoids deep hypothermic circulatory arrest when the SV is short or enters the IVC in an unusually caudad location.

Conclusions Cerebral oximetry reacted promptly to rapid ventricular pacing with significant desaturation and hyperemia a common occurrence. However, no association between this intraoperative insult and objective neurologic injury was detected.
