One‐year case fatality rate following stroke in the Mashhad Stroke Incidence Study: a population‐based study of stroke in Iran
ConclusionDespite the younger age of stroke occurrence in Iran, the one‐year case fatality rate following stroke is similar to that reported in developed countries.

Multi‐modal CT in acute stroke: wait for a serum creatinine before giving intravenous contrast? No!
ConclusionsThe incidence of CIN is low when MMCT is used routinely to assess acute stroke patients. In this population, CIN was a biochemical phenomenon that did not have clinical manifestations, cause chronic kidney disease, require dialysis, or negatively impact on 90‐day mRS outcomes. Renal profiling and waiting for a baseline serum‐creatinine are an unnecessary delay to emergency reperfusion treatment.

A systematic review and meta ‐analysis of randomized controlled trials of endovascular thrombectomy compared with best medical treatment for acute ischemic stroke
ConclusionsThere is clear evidence for improvement in functional independence with endovascular thrombectomy compared with standard medical care, suggesting that endovascular thrombectomy should be considered the standard effective treatment alongside thombolysis in eligible patients.

Statistical analysis plan for evaluating low‐ vs. standard‐dose alteplase in the ENhanced Control of Hypertension and Thrombolysis strokE stuDy (ENCHANTED)
ConclusionsWe have developed a predetermined statistical analysis plan for the ENhanced Control of Hypertension And Thrombolysis strokE stuDy alteplase dose arm which is to be followed to avoid analysis bias arising from prior knowledge of the study findings.

The Clinical Relevance of Microbleeds in Stroke study (CROMIS‐2): rationale, design, and methods
Background and rationaleThe increasing use of oral anticoagulants, mostly to prevent ischemic stroke due to atrial fibrillation in an ageing population, has been associated with a fivefold increased incidence of oral anticoagulant‐associated intracerebral hemorrhage: a rare, serious, and unpredictable complication. We hypothesize that cerebral microbleeds and other markers of cerebral small vessel disease on magnetic resonance imaging, and genetic polymorphisms (e.g. influencing cerebral small vessel integrity or anticoagulation stability), are associated with an increased risk of oral anticoagulant‐associated intracer...

Direct medical cost of stroke in Singapore
ConclusionThere is a considerable economic burden associated with stroke in Singapore. The type of stroke, length of poststroke period, and stroke complications and comorbidities are found to be associated with the total costs. Efforts to reduce inpatient costs and to allocate health resources to focus on the primary prevention of stroke should become a priority.

Canadian Stroke Best Practice Recommendations: Hyperacute Stroke Care Guidelines, Update 2015
The 2015 update of the Canadian Stroke Best Practice Recommendations Hyperacute Stroke Care guideline highlights key elements involved in the initial assessment, stabilization, and treatment of patients with transient ischemic attack (TIA), ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and acute venous sinus thrombosis. The most notable change in this 5th edition is the addition of new recommendations for the use of endovascular therapy for patients with acute ischemic stroke and proximal intracranial arterial occlusion. This includes an overview of the infrastructure and resources required ...

The European Stroke Organisation Guidelines: a standard operating procedure
In 2008, the recently founded European Stroke Organisation published its guidelines for the management of ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack. This highly cited document was translated in several languages and was updated in 2009. Since then, the European Stroke Organisation has published guidelines for the management of intracranial aneurysms and subarachnoidal hemorrhage, for the establishment of stroke units and stroke centers, and recently for the management of intracerebral hemorrhage. In recent years, the methodology for the development of guidelines has evolved significantly. To keep pace with this progres...

Statins and subarachnoid hemorrhage in Medicare patients with unruptured cerebral aneurysms
ConclusionsStatin use by patients with unruptured cerebral aneurysms was not associated with subarachnoid hemorrhage risk. Given the prior animal experimental studies demonstrating a protective effect, further prospective studies are needed to investigate the potential relationship.
