Cerebrovascular correlates of vitamin D deficiency in older adults living near the Equator: results from the Atahualpa Project
This study shows an association of vitamin D deficiency with diffuse subcortical brain damage in older adults living in a tropical region. Lack of awareness of the importance of vitamin D deficiency might be one of the factors influencing the high prevalence of white matter hyperintensities of presumed vascular origin in underserved Latin American populations.

Life‐threatening coronary disease is prevalent in patients with stenosing carotid artery disease
ConclusionsEndarterectomized carotid patients have a high risk of acute myocardial infarction and death, and need an intensified cardiovascular disease‐risk‐lowering treatment. Although asymptomatic, the evaluation of prognostically significant myocardial ischemia should be considered in these high‐risk patients. Eventually, a clinical trial is needed to address whether carotid patients would benefit from early intervention.

Statin use in spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage: a systematic review and meta‐analysis
ConclusionsAlthough careful interpretation is necessary due to several study limitations, we have demonstrated that statin use in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage is likely associated with improved mortality and functional outcomes.

Statins and subarachnoid hemorrhage in Medicare patients with unruptured cerebral aneurysms
ConclusionsStatin use by patients with unruptured cerebral aneurysms was not associated with subarachnoid hemorrhage risk. Given the prior animal experimental studies demonstrating a protective effect, further prospective studies are needed to investigate the potential relationship.

Statin therapy and the risk of intracerebral haemorrhage: a nationwide observational study
ConclusionsIn this matched case‐controlled study, statin therapy was associated with a decreased risk of incident intracerebral haemorrhage. Future studies on risk of stroke with statin therapy after intracerebral haemorrhage are needed.

Combination of intracerebral haemorrhage and familial hypercholesterolemia in the acute hospital setting – a challenge for statin treatment?
It is estimated that worldwide, around 35 million people have familial hypercholesterolemia (FH). Thus, patients affected by the combination of FH and acute intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) are not exceptional and neurologists should be prepared to encounter them. Despite a recent finding of beneficial association between statin use during hospitalization and improved outcomes, the increased risk of recurrent ICH in the long term may make clinicians avoid statins in patients with a history of ICH. However, discontinuing statins in patients with FH worsens cardiovascular outcomes and even increases all‐cause mortality. Acco...

Association between atherogenic dyslipidemia and recurrent stroke risk in patients with different subtypes of ischemic stroke
ConclusionsAtherogenic dyslipidemia is associated with higher risk of stroke recurrence in ischemic stroke patients. Such association might be more pronounced in large‐artery atherosclerosis subtype and needs further investigation to establish such relationship.

Burden of stroke in Puerto Rico
Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and the first cause of long‐term disability in Puerto Rico. Trained staff reviewed and independently validated the medical records of patients who had been hospitalized with possible stroke at any of the 20 largest hospitals located in Puerto Rico during 2007, 2009, and 2011. The mean age of the 5005 newly diagnosed stroke patients (51·2% female) was 70 years. At the time of hospitalization, women were 4½ years older, were less likely to be married (60·2% vs. 39·9%, P < 0·001), smoked less (5·8% vs. 13·4%, P < 0·001), and had significantly higher proportion...

Differences in lipid profiles in two Hispanic ischemic stroke populations
ConclusionWe found significant differences in lipid fractions in Hispanic ischemic stroke patients, with lower total cholesterol and low‐density lipoprotein, and higher triglyceride levels in Mexicans. These findings highlight the heterogeneity of dyslipidemia among the Hispanic race‐ethnic group and may lead to different secondary prevention strategies.

A comparative analysis of risk factors and stroke risk for Asian and non‐Asian men: The Asia Pacific Cohort Studies Collaboration
ConclusionsMen from the Asia‐Pacific region share common risk factors for stroke. Strategies aimed at lowering population levels of systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, body mass index, smoking, and diabetes are likely to be beneficial in reducing stroke risk, particularly for ischemic stroke, across the region.

Review of lipid and lipoprotein(a) abnormalities in childhood arterial ischemic stroke
National organizations recommend cholesterol screening in children to prevent vascular disease in adulthood. There are currently no recommendations for cholesterol and lipoprotein (a) testing in children who experience an arterial ischemic stroke. While dyslipidemia and elevated lipoprotein (a) are associated with ischemic stroke in adults, the role of atherosclerotic risk factors in childhood arterial ischemic stroke is not known. A review of the literature was performed from 1966 to April 2012 to evaluate the association between childhood arterial ischemic stroke and dyslipidemia or elevated lipoprotein (a). Of 239 citat...
