The use of the heparin antagonist protamine after percutaneous intervention for carotid stenosis has been a topic of discussion in the literature as the safety of protamine after carotid angioplasty and stenting procedures has been called into question. Protamine sulfate is a cationic protein that binds with heparin to reverse the anticoagulant activity of unfractionated heparin.
