Ramsay Hunt Syndrome: An Introduction, Signs and Symptoms, and Treatment
This article discusses the etiology, epidemiology, and pathology of Ramsay Hunt syndrome. Clinically it may be presented as a vesicular rash on the ear or even in the mouth, pain in the ear, and facial paralysis. Some other rare symptoms may also be present, which are also discussed in this article. Skin involvement is also seen in some cases as patterns due to anastomoses between cervical and cranial nerves. This article provides an overview of how the varicella-zoster virus causes facial paralysis and other neurological symptoms. Knowing about this condition and its clinical features is essential to make an early diagnos...

Vesiculobullous and Other Cutaneous Manifestations of COVID-19 Vaccines: a Scoping and Narrative Review
In this study, we performed a (1) scoping review to assess the occurrences of vesicular, papulovesicular, and bullous CMs of COVID-19 vaccines and their respective treatments, and (2) a narrative review discussing other common and uncommon CMs of COVID-19 vaccines. Thirty-six articles were included in the scoping review, and 66 articles in the narrative review. We found that vesicular, papulovesicular, and bullous lesions are infrequent, reported mostly after the first dose of Moderna or Pfizer vaccines. Eleven of the 36 studies reported vesicular reactions consistent with activation or reactivation of the herpes zoster vi...

Risk factors for herpes zoster: should people with asthma or COPD be vaccinated?
Respir Res. 2023 Jan 28;24(1):35. doi: 10.1186/s12931-022-02305-1.ABSTRACTWithout vaccination, an estimated 1 in 3 individuals will develop herpes zoster (HZ) in their lifetime. Increased risk of HZ is attributed to impaired cell-mediated immunity, as observed in age-related immunosenescence or in individuals immunocompromised due to disease or immunosuppressive treatments. Most vaccination guidelines recommend HZ vaccination in all adults ≥ 50 years of age, although Shingrix® was recently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in individuals aged ≥ 18 years who are or will be at increased risk of H...

Corneal Complications after COVID-19 Vaccination: A Systemic Review
J Clin Med. 2022 Nov 18;11(22):6828. doi: 10.3390/jcm11226828.ABSTRACTMultiple vaccines are now being used across the world, and several studies have described cases of corneal graft rejection following the administration of the COVID-19 vaccine. The purpose of this article is to review the corneal adverse event that occurred following COVID-19 vaccine administration. The literature search was conducted in March 2022 using MEDLINE, PubMed, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. A total of 27 articles, including 37 cases, have documented corneal adverse events that occurred following COVID-19 vaccination. The mean...

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is associated with an increased risk of herpes zoster: A retrospective United States claims database analysis
Clin Respir J. 2022 Nov 22. doi: 10.1111/crj.13554. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has been reported as a potential risk factor for developing herpes zoster (HZ). We aimed at comparing incidence rates of HZ between people with versus without COPD in the US. This retrospective cohort study used data from Optum's de-identified Clinformatics Data Mart database from 1/1/2013 through 12/31/2018. We identified two cohorts of people ≥40 years without prior HZ, HZ vaccination, postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) or HZ ophthalmicus: those with (COPD+) and those without (COPD-) a COPD diagnosis...

Biological drugs for systemic lupus erythematosus or active lupus nephritis and rates of infectious complications. Evidence from large clinical trials
Front Immunol. 2022 Sep 23;13:999704. doi: 10.3389/fimmu.2022.999704. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTSystemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multisystemic autoimmune disease that frequently affects the kidneys, known as lupus nephritis (LN). Such patients are treated with antimalarials, corticosteroids or immunosuppressive drugs, and more recently, target-specific biological drugs. Although efficacy of these therapies improved SLE-related outcomes, SLE remains associated with higher rates of infections. Here, we performed a comprehensive systemic review of infectious complications in clinical trials covering drug interventions f...

Clinical observation and analysis of skin reactions caused by COVID-19 vaccination
This study included 132 cases of adverse skin reactions after the injection of COVID-19 vaccination from January 2021 to January 2022. The rate of adverse skin reactions after the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd doses of the COVID-19 vaccine were 52%, 40%, and 8% of total adverse skin reactions, respectively. The Urticaria-like rash was the most common manifestation of all adverse skin reactions, accounting for 40.15% of all adverse reactions. The Eczema-like rash was 27.27%. The rates of adverse skin reactions after vaccination with the COVID-19 vaccine in patients with a previous skin disease was 12.12%. Other rare skin adverse reacti...

Where are the vesicles? A case report of Ramsay Hunt syndrome
Malays Fam Physician. 2022 Mar 21;17(1):90-93. doi: 10.51866/cr1351. eCollection 2022 Mar 28.ABSTRACTA 1-year-10-month-old child developed left-sided Ramsay Hunt syndrome (RHS) without vesicles 1 month after an episode of varicella zoster infection. No ear symptoms, including hearing loss, tinnitus, or imbalance, were reported. The external ear and otoscopic examinations were unremarkable. He achieved adequate recovery with corticosteroid treatment. This case report discusses the unusual presentation of RHS without vesicles, the diagnostic dilemma in young children, varicella zoster virus hepatitis, treatment modalities, a...

Manifestation of Herpetic Eye Disease after COVID-19 Vaccine: A UK Case Series
CONCLUSIONS: Our case series highlights the potential temporal association between HED and COVID-19 vaccine. Prophylactic antiviral treatment is recommended in patients with a history of HED prior to COVID-19 vaccination.PMID:35412952 | DOI:10.1080/09273948.2022.2046795
