Self-management Experience of Nurses Living with Migraine: A Qualitative Study
CONCLUSION: The implications of these findings support the incorporation of a critical approach to relational engagement that is person-centred including nonjudgemental, strength-based care as a practice approach when caring for persons living with migraines and the need to include experiential learning in educational curriculums as a strategy to reduce stigma against migraines.PMID:37700606 | DOI:10.1177/08445621231199652

NANN Membership Recommendations: Opportunities to Advance Racial Equity Within the Organization
Adv Neonatal Care. 2023 Sep 13. doi: 10.1097/ANC.0000000000001111. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Neonatal care has advanced significantly in recent years, yet racial health inequities persist in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), with infants from racial and ethnic minority groups less likely to receive recommended treatment. Healthcare providers acknowledge that there are steps that can be taken to increase knowledge and awareness regarding health inequities.PURPOSE: To better understand current health equity-related initiatives in the neonatal community and solicit feedback from National Association of ...

The role of lung ultrasound for detecting atelectasis, consolidation, and/or pneumonia in the adult cardiac surgery population: A scoping review of the literature
Postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) frequently occur after cardiac surgery and may lead to adverse patient outcomes. Traditional diagnostic tools such as auscultation or chest x-ray have inferior diagnostic accuracy compared to the gold standard (chest computed tomography). Lung ultrasound (LUS) is an emerging area of research combating these issues. However, no review has employed a formal search strategy to examine the role of LUS in identifying the specific PPCs of atelectasis, consolidation, and/or pneumonia  or investigated the ability of LUS to predict these complications in this cohort.

Influence of Care on the Prevention of Bacteremia in Hemodialysis: Systematic Review
Nephrol Nurs J. 2023 Jul-Aug;50(4):333-344.ABSTRACTCentral venous catheter-related infection is the most common complication in patients on hemodialysis. Nursing care is essential for its maintenance, minimizing risk factors, and avoiding complications, such as bacteremia. A systematic review was conducted to identify the influence of nursing care on the prevention of bacteremia due to hemodialysis catheter. The primary endpoint was the bacteremia rate measured as number of events per 1000 catheter days. The rate of bacteremia in the studies ranged from 0.2 to 5.47 events per 1000 catheter days after the application of nur...

Quality Improvement Initiative to Increase Modality Education in a Nephrology Clinic During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Nephrol Nurs J. 2023 Jul-Aug;50(4):313-320.ABSTRACTLow attendance by patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD stage 4 and 5) to the kidney replacement therapy (KRT) education sessions was noted by our nurse practitioners at a safety net hospital. The main outcome measure was the weekly percentage of patients with advanced CKD seen by the nephrology division weekly that completed KRT education. Process measures were weekly KRT session attendance by scheduled patients and the weekly referral of patients to KRT education sessions. The weekly education class attendance by scheduled patients reached the target level. ...

Observations in the Field Concerning Infection Control Practices in Dialysis
This article describes observations and findings related to infection prevention and control in dialysis facilities. Ensuring infection control best practices is critical for patient safety. Survey findings related to hand hygiene, disinfection practices, medication preparation and administration, central venous catheter management, and hepatitis B surveillance are reviewed. Implications for nephrology nursing in each scenario are discussed, including survey guidance for COVID-19 post-pandemic.PMID:37695516

The Effect of Dialysis Shift on Depression and Sleep Disturbances in Patients on Chronic Hemodialysis
Nephrol Nurs J. 2023 Jul-Aug;50(4):293-303.ABSTRACTStudies suggest that the hemodialysis (HD) shift on which a patient dialyzes impacts sleep disorders, depressive symptoms, quality of life, and mortality. However, study findings have been limited and inconsistent. The purpose of this project was to determine the relationship between HD shifts (morning, afternoon, and evening), and depression and sleep quality disturbance. Forty-one participants were recruited to participate in this project. Participants on the third shift had the highest levels of depression (M = 11.67) and poorest sleep quality (M = 14.5), compared to th...
