Morbidity in Pregnant Women Associated with Unverified Penicillin Allergies, Antibiotic Use, and Group B Streptococcus Infections.
CONCLUSIONS: Unverified penicillin allergy is associated with more hospital utilization and additional morbidity. Penicillin allergy testing of pregnant women with a history of penicillin allergy may help reduce these unwanted outcomes. PMID: 28333608 [PubMed - in process]

Understanding Penicillin Allergy, Cross-reactivity, and Antibiotic Selection in the Preoperative Setting
This study provides a review of the prevalence of PAL, the cross-reactivity with cefazolin, immunogenic components of cefazolin and penicillin, and current guidelines for preoperative antibiotic selection in patients with PALs. On understanding these principles, a new set of guidelines and a risk stratification tool are proposed for assessing allergies and determining appropriate antibiotic choice, dosage, and timing in the orthopaedic preoperative setting.PMID:34669610 | DOI:10.5435/JAAOS-D-21-00422

Impact of antibiotic prophylaxis on the incidence, nature, magnitude, and duration of bacteremia associated with dental procedures: A systematic review.
Authors: Lafaurie GI, Noriega LA, Torres CC, Castillo Y, Moscoso SB, Mosquera S, Díaz-Báez D, Chambrone L Abstract BACKGROUND: Antibiotic prophylaxis (AP) is used routinely in high-risk groups of patients to reduce bacteremia and the risk of developing infective endocarditis (IE). In this systematic review, the authors evaluated the efficacy of AP on the incidence, nature, magnitude, and duration of post-dental procedure bacteremia. METHODS: The authors conducted a systematic search of the literature using MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials up to and including May 2019. Th...

Variation in practice for preoperative antibiotic prophylaxis: a survey from an academic tertiary referral center in the United States
CONCLUSIONS: There is no clear consensus amongst providers for which antibiotic to administer for antibiotic prophylaxis despite existing guidelines. Discrepancy also exists between orthopaedic surgery and anesthesia providers in regards to appropriate antibiotic choice for patients with reported penicillin allergies. Institutions should implement evidence-based protocols for preoperative antibiotic prophylaxis and continue to prospectively monitor compliance in order to identify any inconsistencies that could result in inappropriate antibiotic prophylaxis for patients.PMID:34706755 | DOI:10.1186/s13037-021-00308-3
