Research Priorities for U.K. Pediatric Critical Care in 2019: Healthcare Professionals’ and Parents’ Perspectives

Skeletal Muscle Changes, Function, and Health-Related Quality of Life in Survivors of Pediatric Critical Illness
CONCLUSIONS: Muscle decreased in critically ill children, which was associated with energy inadequacy and impaired muscle growth postdischarge. Muscle changes correlated with change in mobility, which was associated with child health-related quality of life. Mobility, child health-related quality of life, and parental health-related quality of life appeared to be interlinked.

Ability to Assent in Pediatric Critical Care Research: A Prospective Environmental Scan of Two Canadian PICUs
Conclusions: Very few patients were considered approachable for assent during the first 24 hours of PICU admission. Those who were considered appropriate to approach were less ill, spent less time in PICU, and were unlikely to be considered for enrollment in pediatric critical care research.

Growth and Changing Characteristics of Pediatric Intensive Care 2001–2016
Objectives: We assessed the growth, distribution, and characteristics of pediatric intensive care in 2016. Design: Hospitals with PICUs were identified from prior surveys, databases, online searching, and clinician networking. A structured web-based survey was distributed in 2016 and compared with responses in a 2001 survey. Diagnostic Errors in Pediatric Critical Care: A Systematic Review*
CONCLUSIONS: Knowledge of diagnostic errors in the PICU is limited. Future work to understand diagnostic errors should involve a balanced focus between studying the diagnosis of individual diseases and uncovering common system- and process-related determinants of diagnostic error.
