A Race-neutral Approach to the Interpretation of Lung Function Measurements
CONCLUSIONS: The use of a single "Global" spirometry equation reflects the wide range of lung function observed within and between populations. Given the inherent limitations of any reference equation, the use of GLI Global equations to interpret spirometry requires careful consideration of an individual's symptoms and medical history when used to make clinical, employment, and insurance decisions.PMID:36383197 | DOI:10.1164/rccm.202205-0963OC

Race and Ethnicity in Pulmonary Function Test Interpretation: An Official American Thoracic Society Statement
Am J Respir Crit Care Med. 2023 Mar 27. doi: 10.1164/rccm.202302-0310ST. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCurrent American Thoracic Society (ATS) standards promote the use of racial/ethnic-specific reference equations for pulmonary function test (PFT) interpretation. There is rising concern that the use of race/ethnicity in PFT interpretation contributes to a false view of fixed differences between races and may mask the effects of differential exposures. This use of race/ethnicity may contribute to health disparities by norming differences in pulmonary function. In the United States, race serves as a social construct that is...

Telemedicine and Disparities in Visit Attendance at a Rural Pediatric Primary Care Clinic During the COVID-19 Pandemic
DISCUSSION: The adoption of telemedicine did not reduce pre-existing disparities in visit attendance. Further work is needed to identify the reasons for the disparities and improve visit attendance of historically disadvantaged patient populations.PMID:37464516 | DOI:10.1353/hpu.2023.0048
