Surgical experience and identification of errors in laparoscopic cholecystectomy
CONCLUSION: This study suggests that surgical experience influences error interpretation, but the benefits for surgical training are currently unclear.PMID:37611141 | DOI:10.1093/bjs/znad256

Expert laparoscopist performance on virtual reality simulation tasks with and without haptic features
CONCLUSION: Results showed higher performance in accuracy, efficient instrument motion, and avoidance of excessive traction force on selected tasks performed on VR simulator with haptic feedback compared to those performed without haptics feedback. Laparoscopic surgeons interpreted machine-generated haptic cues appropriately and resulted in better performance with VR task requirements. However, our results do not demonstrate an advantage in skills acquisition, which requires additional study.PMID:37563347 | DOI:10.1007/s00464-023-10321-5

DeviceTalks Q & A: Verb Surgical CEO Scott Huennekens
Few CEOs have been given the mandate Scott Huennekens was charged with as employee No. 1 at Verb Surgical, the robotics spinout backed by Google (NSDQ:GOOG) and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ): Go forth and change the world. “Don’t worry about capital, don’t worry about funding,” Huennekens told MassDevice.com publisher Brian Johnson recently. “Just go out and change the world.” Many CEOs might find that daunting. Then again, most CEOs don’t have a $400 million war chest and the backing of 2 of the world’s most innovative companies. And, as you’ll find out in this interview, Huennekens may not be ...

Prior video game utilization is associated with improved performance on a robotic skills simulator
The objective of our study is to determine whether volume or timing of VGE had any impact on RSS performance. Pre-clinical medical students completed a comprehensive questionnaire detailing previous VGE across several time periods. Seventy-five subjects were ultimately evaluated in 11 training exercises on the daVinci Si Skills Simulator. RSS skill was measured by overall score, time to completion, economy of motion, average instrument collision, and improvement in Ring Walk 3 score. Using the nonparametric tests and linear regression, these metrics were analyzed for systematic differences between non-users, light, and hea...

The impact of feedback of intraoperative technical performance in surgery: a systematic review
Conclusions Intraoperative feedback appears to be associated with an improvement in performance, however, there is a paucity of research in this area. Further work is needed in order to establish the long-term benefits of feedback and the optimum means and circumstances of feedback delivery.

Consumer Centricity: Changing what we know about Health Care
Consumer Centricity is about to change everything we know about health care. It is creating a health investment community where transparency is king and social exchange reinforces value. This is the rise of the consumer health investment marketplace. Technology is improving the conversations and exchange of data—social media (providing peer-to-peer information and counseling), quantifying technology (providing measures of health to the person without the need for clinical reporting), and financial advice (tune in to some of the social media pages for patient and cost advocacy). We are witnessing the handoff of health ca...
