Operative strokes after repair of acute type a dissections: predisposing factors and implications.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients who developed stroke after type A dissection repair had higher complication rates and a higher mortality rate at 30 days, 1 year, and 5 years. Femoral cannulation was the only technical factor associated with a higher rate of strokes. PMID: 30747502 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Impact of Complications on Resource Utilization during 90-day CABG Bundle for Medicare Beneficiaries
ConclusionsMedicare beneficiaries that experience adverse events during their index CABG hospitalization will significantly impact that hospital’s financial risk. The challenge under the voluntary CABG bundled payment program will be to monitor and reduce adverse events and managing the services consumed by Medicare beneficiaries experiencing adverse events delivered at all the venues of care.

Effect of Hydraulic Expansion on Arteriovenous Fistula of Hemodialysis Patients
Conclusion Hydraulic expansion showed no difference from conventional surgery in complication after operation, and could decrease the time reliance on catheters and the risk of catheter-related infection, thrombosis, and decrease the related medical care costs. The impact of surgeon and hospital procedural volume on outcomes after aortic root replacement in the United States
ConclusionAmong Medicare patients undergoing an aortic root replacement, there is a strong inverse relationship between annualized surgeon and hospital case volume and postoperative outcomes. Procedural volume is an important quality metric for this high ‐risk procedure.

Contemporary outcomes of mitral valve replacement in octogenarians
ConclusionsThe perioperative and follow-up outcomes of MVR in octogenarians were not inferior to those of younger patients. We should not hesitate to conduct MVR on the grounds of old age.

Factors Influencing Hospital Length of Stay After Robotic Totally Endoscopic Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting ORIGINAL ARTICLES: ADULT CARDIAC
Conclusions Multiple variables affect LOS after TECAB. Older patients, patients on hemodialysis, patients with cerebrovascular disease, and those with higher general risk scores should expect prolonged LOS. Intraoperative surgical difficulties and conversion to open coronary artery bypass grafting also lead to extended LOS. Postoperative events that are known to prolong LOS in open coronary artery bypass grafting also prolong LOS after TECAB.

317 * comparison of anterolateral minithoracotomy versus hemisternotomy in minimally invasive aortic valve replacement: a single-centre study
Conclusions: Summarizing, the ALM group showed more perioperative complications; however 90-day mortality did not differ.

Single-Center Experience and Short-term Outcome With the JenaValve: A Second-Generation Transapical Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation Device
ConclusionsThis second-generation repositionable transcatheter aortic valve implantation device could safely and successfully be implanted with a fast learning curve, significant reduction in pressure gradients, overall clinical improvement at discharge, as well as an acceptable morbidity and mortality rate in this highest-risk patient cohort.

Thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm repair after frozen elephant trunk procedure AORTIC SURGERY
CONCLUSION Second-stage TA aortic repair after previous frozen elephant implantation is a feasible and effective treatment modality for patients with various pathologies of downstream aortic segments. This approach adds additional value to the conventional elephant trunk technique by providing an excellent landing zone not only for additional stent graft procedures but also for subsequent open TA repair.

Should we consider beating-heart on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting over conventional cardioplegic arrest to improve postoperative outcomes in selected patients?
A best evidence topic in cardiac surgery was written according to a structured protocol. The question addressed was whether beating-heart on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (BH-ONCAB) offered superior mortality and morbidity outcomes when compared with conventional on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (C-ONCAB). Morbidity outcomes consisted of renal failure, stroke (transient or permanent), myocardial infarction, angina, congestive cardiac failure, reintervention and arrhythmias. Best evidence papers investigating BH-ONCAB versus C-ONCAB were considered. Where data were duplicated, the more credible evidence-based ...
